The Damend Clowns
On Christmas Eve, while thousands families exchange presents and celebrate the birth of Jesus, an intense movement surrounds several cities in the Brazilian countryside. Among the holy-masters, Lieutenants with their sacred banners and enchanted revelers, unknow groups keep alive a tradition almost forgotten: the Folia de Reis, which celebrates the journey of the Three Wise Men in the East to meet the birth of Jesus Christ.
Using monster masks, colorful clothes and recinting verses or curses, the Folia de Reis’ Damned Clowns represent the profane side of this celebration. According to tradition, the clowns symbolize the Roman soldiers who sought to kill Jesus, the newborn prophet.
